Children of the Heavenly Father

By Carolina Sandell

Lyrics

1. Children of the heav'nly Father,
Safely in his bosom gather;
Nesting bird nor star in Heaven
Such a refuge e'er was given.
2. God his own does tend and nourish;
In his holy courts they flourish.
From all evil things he spares them;
In his mighty arms he bears them.
3. . Neither life nor death shall ever
from the Lord his children sever;
Unto them his grace is showing,
And their sorrows all is knowing.
4. Lo, their very hairs he numbers,
And no daily care encumbers
Those who share his ev'ry blessing,
And his help in woes distressing.
5. Praise the Lord in joyful numbers;
Your protector never slumbers;
At the will of your Defender,
Every rival must surrender.
6. God has given, he has taken,
But his child is ne’er forsaken;
His the loving purpose solely
To preserve us, pure and holy.

About This Hymn

“Children of the Heavenly Father” is one of the most tender and comforting hymns written by Carolina Sandell Berg, often called the Fanny Crosby of Sweden because of her gentle devotional poetry. Written in 1855, the hymn expresses the deep security and peace that believers enjoy under the care of God. Its theme reflects Carolina Sandell’s own life experience. As a young woman she passed through sorrow and loss, and these trials shaped her trust in the Lord’s protecting love.

The hymn presents God as a gentle Father who guards His children with perfect wisdom and compassion. Every line points to a relationship of safety. Believers are pictured as resting in God’s arms, sheltered from danger, and held close to His heart. This truth echoes the promises found in Psalm 91, where those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High are covered under His wings.

Carolina Sandell lifts the worshipper’s mind to see the Father’s care in both joy and hardship. Nothing happens outside His knowledge, and nothing can separate His children from His love, a truth that reflects the words of Jesus in John 10 where He promises that no one can pluck His sheep out of His hand. Because of this certainty the hymn encourages a calm and trusting spirit that relies fully on God’s goodness.

The gentle rhythm and warm tone make the hymn especially suited for children’s gatherings, family worship, and moments when comfort is needed. Yet its message is equally rich for adults. It reminds believers that they belong to a Father who governs the world with power and kindness, and who leads His people with continual care. “Children of the Heavenly Father” remains cherished around the world because it speaks simply, clearly, and beautifully of the loving protection found in God alone.
