As Jacob With Travel Was Weary

By Traditional English Hymns

Lyrics

1. As Jacob with travel was weary one day,
At night on a stone for a pillow he lay;
He saw in a vision a ladder so high
That its foot was on earth and its top in the sky:
Refrain:
Alleluia to Jesus, who died on the tree,
And has raised up a ladder of mercy for me,
And has raised up a ladder of mercy for me.
2. This ladder is long, it is strong and well made,
Has stood hundreds of years and is not yet decayed;
Many millions have climbed it and reached Sion’s hill,
And thousands by faith are climbing it still:
3. Come, let us ascend! All may climb it who will;
For the angels of Jacob are guarding it still:
And remember, each step that by faith we pass o’er,
Some prophet or martyr hath trod it before:
4. And when we arrive at the haven of rest,
We shall hear the glad words, “Come up hither, ye blest,
Here are regions of light, here are mansions of bliss."
Oh, who would not climb such a ladder as this?

About This Hymn

“As Jacob With Travel Was Weary,” often known as “Jacob’s Ladder,” is a devotional hymn that rises from the heart of early American spiritual tradition, calling believers to perseverance, holiness, and upward striving toward God. The hymn uses the biblical account of Jacob at Bethel, where he slept on a stony path and dreamed of a ladder reaching from earth to heaven. Angels ascended and descended upon it, and the Lord spoke promises of His presence, protection, and future blessing. This scene from Genesis provides a powerful symbol of spiritual progress, a path that begins in human weakness and reaches toward the glory of God. The hymn takes that symbol and turns it into an invitation for every believer to climb steadily in faith, trusting in the God who meets His people even when they feel weary, burdened, or far from home.

This hymn gained deep roots in Christian worship because of its strong blend of Scripture, devotion, and encouragement. It reminds worshippers that Jacob was not seeking a vision, yet God met him in his weariness and revealed the connection between heaven and earth that He Himself provides. The hymn draws on that truth to show that spiritual growth is not built on human strength alone, but on God’s initiative and grace. Every rung of the ladder represents steps of obedience, prayer, steadfastness, and hope. Believers are encouraged to climb with patience and faith, knowing that the Lord who appeared to Jacob continues to guide His people through every trial. The repeated call to “rise” and “climb” carries a strong sense of discipleship, urging Christians to live in a way that seeks the things above and turns away from the sins and distractions that hinder spiritual growth.

Many congregations have embraced this hymn because of its simple structure and memorable theme. The image of a ladder stretching toward heaven speaks to all ages, and its spiritual application is clear. The hymn encourages believers to live as people who belong to a higher kingdom, remembering the words of Jesus in John’s Gospel that the Son of Man is the true connection between heaven and earth. In this sense, Jacob’s ladder becomes more than a dream, for it points directly to Christ who opens the way to God and invites His followers to walk in that path with confidence.

The devotional tone of the hymn inspires endurance during hardship, courage during temptation, and comfort during moments of weakness or sorrow. It assures believers that even when they feel weary, as Jacob once did, God is near with promises that reach far beyond the present moment. Through its gentle melody and heavenly imagery, the hymn helps worshippers set their hearts on the eternal hope that awaits those who continue to climb in faith. As a result, “As Jacob With Travel Was Weary” remains a treasured hymn that strengthens Christian devotion and reminds believers that God meets His people on the journey, lifts their eyes heavenward, and guides them step by step toward His everlasting presence.
