About Arthur C. Coxe

Arthur Cleveland Coxe (1818–1896) was a prominent American bishop, poet, and hymn writer. Born in Mendham, New Jersey, he was the son of the notable Presbyterian minister Rev. Samuel H. Cox, D.D. Coxe graduated from the University of New York in 1838 and was ordained in 1841. He began his clerical career as Rector of St. John’s, Hartford, Connecticut in 1842. Later, he served as Rector of Grace Church, Baltimore, from 1854, and Calvary Church, New York, from 1863. In 1865, he was consecrated Bishop of the Western Diocese of New York, residing in Buffalo.

Coxe was a prolific author of religious poetry and hymns. His early works included Advent (1837), Christian Ballads (1840), Athanasion (1842), Hallowe’en and Other Poems (1844), and Saul, a Mystery (1845). Many of his hymns were widely used across American religious collections, although they were often absent from official Episcopal hymnals due to Coxe’s modesty, as he preferred not to include his own works when serving on hymn committees.

Coxe also translated Pange Lingua Gloriosi Corporis and authored the Christmas carol Carol, Carol, Christians. His work reflects a deep commitment to moral and missionary themes, blending poetic artistry with devotional purpose.
