About Alfred Tennyson
Full Name: Tennyson, Alfred Tennyson, Baron, 1809–1892
Birth Year: 1809
Death Year: 1892
Alfred Tennyson was born on August 6, 1809, at Somersby, Lincolnshire, the son of the Rev. G. C. Tennyson, rector of Somersby. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he began to establish his reputation as a poet. In 1850, he was appointed Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom, a position he held until his death, and in 1884, he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Tennyson.
While Tennyson did not compose hymns in the traditional sense, excerpts from his poetry have occasionally been adapted for use in Christian worship. Notable examples include "Strong Son of God, immortal Love" from the introduction to In Memoriam (1850), sometimes titled "Spirit of immortal Love" or "Eternal God, immortal Love", as well as lines such as "Too late, too late, ye cannot enter now." His literary work has influenced both hymnody and devotional readings through these adaptations.
