More Holiness Give Me
By Philip P. Bliss
Lyrics
More strivings within,
More patience in suff’ring,
More sorrow for sin,
More faith in my Savior,
More sense of his care,
More joy in his service,
More purpose in prayer.
More trust in the Lord,
More Gladness in his glory,
More hope in his word,
More tears for his sorrows,
More pain at his grief,
More meekness in trial,
More praise for relief.
More strength to o’ercome,
More freedom from earth-stains,
More longing for home.
More fit for the kingdom,
More used would I be,
More blessed and holy—
More, Savior, like thee.

About This Hymn
“More Holiness Give Me” was written by Philip Paul Bliss in 1873, one of the most gifted hymn writers and gospel singers of the nineteenth century. Bliss, who was closely associated with evangelists such as Dwight L. Moody and Daniel W. Whittle, composed both the text and the tune of this hymn, which quickly became a favorite in revival meetings. The hymn is a heartfelt prayer that reflects the believer’s desire for deeper sanctification and closer fellowship with God.
The lyrics follow a pattern of humble petition, each stanza beginning with the request for “more.” This repetition emphasizes the yearning of the soul for continual growth in holiness, patience, gratitude, purity, prayerfulness, and preparation for heaven. Rather than being satisfied with initial faith, Bliss directs the singer toward a progressive sanctification, echoing the apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 3:13–14 about pressing toward the mark of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. The hymn is not simply about moral improvement but about transformation through the Spirit of God, which shapes the believer into the likeness of Christ.
The scriptural foundation of this hymn is rooted in Christ’s Beatitudes, especially the call to purity of heart and hunger for righteousness. The final stanza culminates in the anticipation of heaven, where the faithful will finally be made perfect in holiness. Because of its devotional depth and meditative quality, “More Holiness Give Me” is often used in personal prayer, consecration services, and moments of quiet reflection. Philip Bliss, who died tragically in a train accident in 1876 at the age of only 38, left behind a rich legacy of gospel hymns, and this particular hymn remains one of his most earnest and enduring prayers set to song.
