Who Is God?
Understanding the Nature and Attributes of the Almighty
God is not just a subject for theologians. He is the most important reality in existence. And knowing Him is the most vital pursuit of our lives. The Bible tells us, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). In a world full of distractions and questions, let’s take a moment to focus on who God is, what He is like, and how we can understand His nature.
God Is the Creator
The first thing the Bible reveals about God is that He created everything (Genesis 1:1). From the galaxies above to the smallest particles below, God made it all. He designed the world with wisdom (Proverbs 3:19), with purpose (Isaiah 45:18), and with goodness (Genesis 1:31). He didn't need to create the world, He chose to. That’s grace.
God Is the Sustainer
God didn’t just wind up the universe and walk away. He sustains everything day by day. Acts 17:28 says, “In him we live, and move, and have our being.” Every breath, heartbeat, sunrise, and change of seasons is held in place by God’s power and care (Hebrews 1:3).
God Is the Judge
Because God created everything, He also holds everything accountable. He is a righteous judge (Genesis 18:25), never unfair or biased (Romans 2:11). Every person and every deed will one day stand before Him (2 Corinthians 5:10). This should stir both reverence and responsibility in our hearts.
Key Attributes of God
1. God Is Eternal
God has no beginning and no end (Psalm 90:2). He always was and always will be. He is beyond time, seeing all history at once. For Him, a thousand years is like a day (2 Peter 3:8).
2. God Is Unchanging
God is constant. Malachi 3:6 says, “I am the Lord, I change not.” While everything around us shifts and fades, God remains the same. His promises never fail, His character never changes, and His love endures forever.
3. God Is All-Powerful
God can do all things consistent with His nature. He is called the Almighty (Revelation 19:6). Nothing is too hard for Him (Jeremiah 32:17). He has the authority and ability to accomplish His perfect will.
4. God Is Everywhere
God is present in all places at once. Psalm 139:7-10 reminds us that we can never escape His presence. Whether we are on a mountain or in a valley, God is there—near to help, guide, and comfort.
5. God Is All-Knowing and All-Wise
God sees everything and knows everything (1 John 3:20). His understanding is infinite (Psalm 147:5). He not only knows all facts, but He knows how to use that knowledge perfectly. His wisdom guides history and our individual lives.
God's Moral Perfection
6. God Is Holy
God is morally pure and set apart from sin. The Bible says He is “Holy, holy, holy” (Isaiah 6:3). Everything He does is right and just.
7. God Is Good
Psalm 100:5 says, “The Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting.” God’s goodness means He is kind, generous, and full of compassion. Even when we do not understand His ways, we can trust His heart.
8. God Is Just
God always does what is right. He cannot lie (Titus 1:2), and He never lets evil go unpunished or good go unnoticed. His justice is perfect.
9. God Is Love
Perhaps the most famous declaration in Scripture is “God is love” (1 John 4:8). His love is not just a feeling but a deep, committed care for His creation. His love sent Jesus Christ to die for us so we might live (John 3:16).
What Should We Do?
Knowing who God is should lead us to worship, trust, and follow Him. God is not unknowable. While we can’t fully grasp His infinite nature, we can truly know Him through His Word and through Jesus Christ.
The more we understand God’s character—His power, presence, justice, goodness, and love, the more we are moved to awe and transformed in how we live. As we grow in our knowledge of God, we should also grow in becoming more like Him (Ephesians 5:1).
Final Thought:
"Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen." (1 Timothy 1:17)
