Frequently Asked Questions

You can search from the Search page or the search box on the home page. Enter the hymn title, author name, or words from the lyrics. You can also filter by category (Hymn, Scripture Song, etc.), author, or year. For more options (tune name, composer, meter), use our Advanced Search.
The Hymn Index is the hub for browsing. From there you can:
- By Author – Browse all authors alphabetically and see their hymns.
- By Title – Browse all hymns alphabetically by title.
- By Scripture – Find hymns linked to Bible references.
- By Year – Browse by year of composition.
- By MIDI – Find hymns that have MIDI files for playback or practice.
Our Hymn Writers Biographies section lists authors who have a biography on the site. You can search by name, sort by oldest hymn, most hymns, or most viewed, and switch between grid and list view. Click any writer to see their bio, photo, stats, and a table of their hymns.
Yes. On each hymn’s page, if sheet music or a MIDI file is available, you’ll see download or view links. Sheet music is often shown in-browser; MIDI files can be played on the page or downloaded for use in music software. Use the MIDI index to find all hymns with MIDI.
Tune name is the name of the melody (e.g. “Amazing Grace”). Composer is the person who wrote the tune. Meter describes the syllable pattern of the lyrics (e.g. 8.6.8.6), which helps you match lyrics to other tunes with the same meter. When we have this information, it appears on the hymn page and in search results. You can search by tune or composer in Advanced Search.
Go to All Hymns to see the full list. You can switch between list and grid view, sort by title, author, views, or date, and filter by category. Use the search box on that page to narrow results, or use the Hymn Index to browse by author, scripture, year, or MIDI.
